Avon football counting on Sam Gerak, offensive line to assist lead young offense, new quarterback

AVON, Ohio — Avon soccer coach Mike Elder isn't certain yet who will substitute future Cincinnati Bearcat Jake Sopko at quarterback.

What he does know is whoever begins will have an experienced offensive line led with the aid of Northwestern commit Sam Gerak to protect him.

Avon returns 5 starters on offense, four of whom are offensive linemen.

The Eagles will need to exchange Sopko and superstar RB Gerret Choat. but Elder has self belief within the talent and depth his group has up front led by Gerak, Taylor Reynolds, Vito Sikora and Michael Sustar.

"We consider like we're going to be as physical as we have now ever been," Elder stated. "I suppose we're two-deep on the offensive line and doubtless (in a) more suitable depth position than we have ever been considering the fact that i have been at Avon."

That veteran offensive should be key to holding the Eagles' subsequent startingquarterback.

Sopko threw for two,393 yards and 26 touchdowns to only 1 interception within the standard season ultimate 12 months and completed 66 % of his passes.

Elder pointed out he would not have a clear favorite yet however has 4 contenders together with senior Matt Kelly, the most effective returning passer with varsity adventure remaining yr, junior Carson Gosselin and sophomore Ryan Maloy. Maloy brings extra of a dual-risk option that Avon hasn't in fact had in Elder's career.

"he's extra of an athlete at quarterback. He also throws it very smartly," Elder said. "he's a kid who's going to compete to delivery at defense on our soccer crew as neatly. so that speaks volumes for his athleticism. however Carson Gosselin is also a very good athlete, and he's labored specially complicated.

"by way of design, we do not run our quarterbacks plenty at Avon. i know a lot of different colleges do. it's their philosophy. Ours is never so an awful lot to run them plenty despite the fact we run them when we want them. So we are going to see how this all pans out."

Gerak is the anchor of Avon's offensive line this season. At 6-foot-three, 280 kilos, Gerak, who will play middle at Northwestern, is the No. 6 center within the country and No. 32 prospect in Ohio in response to 247Sports.com's composite rankings.

With the pressure early within the season resting on the offensive line, Gerak feels he and the different returning linemen are wanting to face that problem.

"I suppose there's lots of power on the road and there should be as a result of we're going to the strong element of our team this 12 months," Gerak talked about. "here's the strongest line I believe we now have had in Avon history."

That power up front might be confirmed within the Southwestern convention after 5 of the league's ten groups, together with Avon, made the playoffs remaining season.

"Our intention is one to be one of the crucial actual teams within the league," Elder noted. "that's a lofty purpose as a result of there may be a lot of in reality first rate soccer teams who will hit you in our league. We need to be one of them."

The Eagles also have to find a substitute for Choat, who had 1,248 yards speeding and 17 touchdowns closing year. Elder feels there are just a few younger backs who've a chance to fill that starting role as neatly.

Senior Jake Bauer is the team's appropriate returning rusher with 79 yards and two touchdowns remaining 12 months.
